Is Your Mobile Store Really Ready for Black Friday Sales?
Test Your Mobile Shopping Platform with Google
Forrester Research is forecasting a $10 billion jump in online spending this holiday season, with e-commerce sales in the U.S. reaching $89 billion in November and December.
That’s a 13% increase over last year, according to Forrester analyst Sucharita Mulpuru. It represents 30% of annual e-commerce sales for 2014, and about 14% of the entire holiday retail pie.
Among the key growth drivers?
Experienced online gift finders are likely to shift 10% more of their budget into online channels. And as smartphones become increasingly ubiquitous, more people will be using them to both browse and buy.
So, are you really ready for the holiday crush? Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind, and a great link to test your mobile site.
1. Shoppers behave differently with a mobile device in their hand.
Shoppers take on a different personality when they stand up from a computer and put a phone or tablet in their hands. They are highly distracted by the world around them. They don’t like entering lots of data on the smaller keyboard and screen. They search differently, with shorter queries and more voice search. They use thumbs, which are more inaccurate than a mouse. The list goes on, and a mobile site needs to adjust for the unique mobile shopper with large, colorful photos, simple navigation and fast load times.
2. Mobile devices are like snowflakes – no two are alike
Your site needs to be able to work perfectly and display beautifully on the more than 1,200 different mobile devices used by shoppers to access e-commerce sites. It must adjust for a wide variety of screen sizes (e.g., Blackberry to the Apple 6+, for phones), keyboard options, screen resolutions, browser types, and operating systems. Even two phones from the same manufacturer can cause problems for your mobile site since there are still not concrete standards in the mobile world. It’s vital that you know if you’re site will render properly.
Simply go to the Google site and paste the URL of your mobile site and, voila, you’ll see your rating.
