Are Flash Sales The Answer in M-Commerce?
Are Flash Sales The Answer in Mobile?
E-commerce marketers are struggling to succeed in mobile. Traffic is up enormously, but conversion rates, while improving, have not kept pace. It’s not that the mobile customer base is finicky. As marketers, we need to better understand the mobile imperative – those daily occurrences that cause someone to breakout her/his phone to go to a site, and make a purchase – in order to attain better results in mobile conversion and new customer acquisition. New data suggests that Flash sales may be the answer. Flash sales may have a lost a bit of luster compared with just a couple years ago, but in mobile flash sales may reign supreme! A recent study published by the digital quality and testing firm Applause suggests that flash sale sites are significantly outperforming standard retail behemoths in mobile. According to Applause, the flash sale sites consistently rank highest in terms of customer rankings. And while the correlation may not be perfect, because the study only looked at companies where more than 40% of their revenues came from mobile devices, the correlation does seem highly significant.Generally speaking, smartphone users are not browsers. We are not sitting in our comfy chairs or lying in bed, randomly surfing. We are out and about, getting stuff done. We are mobile! And this make sense, after all, we are all part of the very mobile demographic we are trying to reach and how many of us randomly decided to break out a phone as we were walking, driving, commuting or chatting in a cafe and said, “Hmm, Im going to buy a flat screen TV right now!” Mobile marketers, take heed: if your offers and messaging helps make life easier, faster, better, etc. in the context of our busy day to day lives, then you will do very well. If not, then you will have very little conversions, if any! Generally the mobile imperative is triggered by a need; I need to know… I need to buy… I need to eat… I need to go… Such needs are powerful enough to trigger a micro moment. Random push offers, display ads are not…Even with the best demographic targeting, the probability of success is driven only by the random chance that your ‘pushed impression’ lands on the eyes and ears of someone who happens to have a need at that precise moment?
Do You Have FOMO?
Well crafted flash sales trigger urgency due to our fear of missing out; it’s called “FOMO”. FOMO is so common, the acronym was actually added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. And FOMO is a great mobile imperative because people are afraid that they will miss out if they do not act right away!Does this make sense?
